The VW Golf MK4 1.9 TDI PD is one of the most popular platforms for diesel performance tuning in the UK. Reliable, tuneable, and with an enormous aftermarket — it’s no surprise that hybrid turbo upgrades are one of the most searched modifications for this car.

In this guide we’ll walk through the four main hybrid turbo options available for the MK4 Golf 1.9 TDI PD platform, what power you can realistically expect, and the supporting modifications you’ll need to get the most out of your build.

Which Engine Does Your MK4 Golf Have?

Before selecting a turbo, confirm your engine code. The MK4 Golf 1.9 TDI came with several variants:

  • ALH — 90hp, non-PD (earlier injection system, different turbo family)
  • ASV — 110hp, non-PD
  • AXR / BEW — 100hp, PD (pumpe-duse)
  • BJB / BKC / BXE — 105hp, PD — the most common hybrid turbo platform
  • ASZ / BLT — 130hp, PD — uses a larger VNT variable-vane factory turbo; different hybrid upgrade path to the 105hp PD platform
  • ARL — 150hp, PD — already running a larger factory turbo

The Hybrid Turbo Options — Compared

GT1749 49mm Billet Hybrid — Stock-Size Upgrade

The GT1749 49mm billet hybrid keeps the stock compressor size but replaces the factory cast wheel with a lighter billet unit. The result: quicker spool and improved flow over the standard turbo — a proper upgrade without moving into a bigger turbo frame.

  • Direct fit — same size as stock, no fitment changes
  • Power target: 180-220hp flywheel
  • Spool: Quicker than stock (lighter billet wheel)
  • Best for: Daily drivers wanting more response and flow without stepping up to a larger turbo

GT1752 52mm Billet Hybrid — Entry Level Step-Up

The GT1752 52mm billet hybrid is the first proper step-up in compressor size. It’s a direct bolt-on replacement with noticeably more top-end than the stock-size billet, while keeping good spool for road use.

  • Direct fit — no manifold modification required
  • Power target: 200-240hp flywheel
  • Spool: Fast — minimal lag over standard
  • Best for: Road use and daily drivers wanting stronger top-end

GT1756 56mm Billet Hybrid — The Sweet Spot

The GT1756 is the perfect balance of spool speed and top-end power for the 1.9 TDI PD platform. With full supporting mods and a quality remap, 210-250hp at the flywheel is achievable.

  • Direct fit to PD105 platform
  • Power target: 210-250hp flywheel
  • Best for: Performance road builds and light track days

GT1856 — High Power Build

For those chasing serious power, the GT1856 delivers 250-310hp at the flywheel on a properly built engine, depending on the fuel system. Not for the faint-hearted — upgraded fuelling is essential.

  • Power target: 250-310hp flywheel (fuel system dependent)
  • Best for: Dedicated performance and track builds

Essential Supporting Modifications

  • Remap — Non-negotiable. A hybrid on a stock map will run poorly and risk damage.
  • Braided oil feed pipe — Improved reliability especially at higher boost levels.
  • EGR blank — For off-road and track use only; illegal for road-registered vehicles in the UK since May 2018.
  • Uprated intercooler — Advisable above 250hp to avoid heat soak.
  • Fresh oil service — Oil starvation is the number one cause of turbo failure. Always start clean.

Real-World Power Figures

  • GT1749 49mm billet (stock size): 180-220hp at the flywheel
  • GT1752 + remap: 200-240hp at the flywheel
  • GT1756 + remap + supporting mods: 210-250hp at the flywheel
  • GT1856 + full build: 250-310hp at the flywheel (fuel system dependent)
